List of Reputable Organizations for Donating to Ukraine in 2022

With the war in Ukraine on everyone’s minds, the question I hear most is: how do I help Ukraine? Or, where can I donate money that will make a real difference? Good questions! Below is a list of reputable organizations that would love your donation. But first, let me tell you why donating may not be the best way to help. You can also find the quick list here thanks to Razom.

Before You Donate

Donating money to good causes is great, but there are downsides. For one, organizations like Patreon and GoFundMe take a cut of the funds raised. Also, in the case of Patreon, they may unexpectedly close account:

“Patreon took down an account run by one of Ukraine’s biggest charitable foundations because the organization uses donations to supply equipment for the country’s military.”

Insider

Please donate if you can, but donations can also seem like the ‘easy way out.’ People feel bad, donate money, feel good about themselves, stop supporting a cause in other ways. Although I don’t want to discourage anyone from donating to Ukraine, I would love to see people help in other ways if at all possible. For example, check out Host a Sister if you are a woman who is able to host a lady from Ukraine or others in need.

I also urge people donating to do their research about the organizations they pick. My favorite source for news right now, The Kyiv Independent, has almost 1 million dollars in donations on GoFundMe. So as someone who can’t donate a significant amount, I would not pick them. I may donate to someone like the Helmets & Armory Vests for the European Defenders 🇺🇦 instead. I love when organizations tell you how much the items they are collecting cost to buy:

I also like when they let you pick what your donation will be used for so you can donate more mindfully:

Unfortunately, there is a lot of donation fraud out there. My main social media platform is Facebook and I have seen so many ads for fake organizations:

“Scammers are using the crisis in Ukraine as a way to swindle altruistic people who are looking to provide financial assistance to those in need.”

Newsweek

This is why I always advocate for donating to local organizations that you are sure will use the money well. This isn’t possible for everyone in this case, which is why I put together this list. Taken mostly from Razom for Ukraine.

Reputable Organizations: Donate to Ukraine

A lot of this list is taken from Razom for Ukraine in no particular order. Razom is an organization that was formed in 2013/2014. They have been collecting money for refugees moving across Ukraine and also supporting the soldiers, both civilian and military.

“Razom, which means “together” in Ukrainian, believes deeply in the enormous potential of dedicated volunteers around the world united by a single goal: to unlock the potential of Ukraine. Razom works towards that mission by creating spaces where people meet, partner, and do.”

We are committed to raise $500,000 to send twenty 40-foot containers to Ukrainian hospitals in Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv and other areas in need. We continue fundraising towards next humanitarian cargo and ask for your support!

To date, the war in Ukraine has left thousands dead and tens of thousands wounded. Hospitals in Ukraine are under immense strain that will likely continue for a long time regardless of how quickly the war can be ended. Doctors and numerous volunteers have been doing a consistently heroic job, but are in dire need of more trauma-related equipment and surgical tools.

Our team is committed to supporting Ukrainian hospitals with much needed modern medical equipment and supplies. We are doing this in a sustainable, transparent and cost-effective manner by partnering with one of the largest US medical surplus recovery non-profit: Project C.U.R.E. as well as numerous NGOs in the United States and Ukraine.

Thanks to the support of our partners and the project model, for $1 of donations we are able to ship to Ukraine $25-30 of medical equipment and supplies. All the work on the project is done on a strictly volunteer basis, the project has 0% overhead, and does not handle donation money.

With the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine, we continue our work in shipping humanitarian medical cargo and ask for your support. Please support this cause and donate. Any amount will make a change! All donations are tax-deductible.

Please share this information with your friends. If you would like to learn more about the project, see the results of your donations, get updates, or contact us directly, visit www.uahospitals.org or our page on Facebook.  Donate to them here.

13. DONATE: Support Independent Ukrainian English-language journalism

A cause near and dear to my heart. The Kyiv Independent is Ukraine’s English-language media outlet, created by journalists who were fired from the Kyiv Post for defending editorial independence.

The Kyiv Post, Ukraine’s global voice, went silent on Nov. 8, 2021, days after celebrating the 26th year of its uninterrupted run. The publication was shut down by the owner in his attempt to take full control of the newsroom that has always followed the principle of editorial independence.

Yet, the editorial team of the independent Kyiv Post refused to be silenced. If we couldn’t save the Kyiv Post brand, we could save its values. On Nov. 11, 2021, over 30 ex-Kyiv Post employees decided to continue the Kyiv Post’s legacy by launching a new publication – the Kyiv Independent. The following values will serve as the backbone of the Kyiv Independent:

  • The new publication will serve its readers and community, and nobody else.
  • The Kyiv Independent won’t be dependent on a rich owner or an oligarch. The publication will depend on fundraising from readers and donors and later on, commercial activities.
  • The newsroom will decide and execute the publication’s editorial policy in the community’s best interests. Attempts to influence it from outside will not be tolerated.
  • The Kyiv Independent will always be at least partly owned by its journalists.
  • The Kyiv Independent will strive to reach financial sustainability to preserve its independence in the future.

The team unanimously chose Olga Rudenko, former deputy chief editor at the Kyiv Post, who dedicated 10 years to the brand, to lead the new publication as editor-in-chief.

The Kyiv Independent is still in the making. The website you see is our first, temporary platform. As we embark on this new project, we vow to serve as the true, independent voice of Ukraine.

The Kyiv Independent provides fair and reliable news on a variety of topics. From Russia’s war against Ukraine and disinformation campaigns to the ongoing pandemic and medical procurement, from human rights in occupied Donbas and Crimea to reforms in Kyiv, nothing will escape the view of the Kyiv Independent.

But we can only do it together with you. Join us today and become a part of Ukraine’s fight for a better future with the Kyiv Independent.
